Supporting Food Service Workers during Summer Soccer Season

June 12, 2026

Soccer fans are gathering in restaurants, bars, breweries, and cafes across North America to cheer on their favorite teams and celebrate the excitement of international competition. While the action unfolds on the pitch, food service workers are preparing for some of the busiest shifts of the year.

Packed dining rooms, full patios, extended hours, and nonstop orders are becoming the norm as fans come together to watch matches with friends, family, and fellow supporters. Behind every watch party, shared meal, and game-winning celebration are the service industry professionals working hard to make those moments possible.

Giving Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency assistance and community resources to food service workers through crisis and hardship, is encouraging soccer fans to show a little extra gratitude to the people serving their communities throughout tournament season.

“Restaurants and bars often become gathering places during major sporting events,” says Leah Melnick, Giving Kitchen’s Sr. Director of Community Engagement. “As fans celebrate together, we hope they’ll take a moment to recognize the servers, bartenders, cooks, dishwashers, hosts, managers, and countless other food service workers helping create those experiences.”

Giving Kitchen encourages guests to support food service workers by:

  • Tipping generously whenever possible
  • Being patient during busy service periods
  • Treating restaurant staff with kindness and respect
  • Choosing local restaurants and bars for watch parties

Taking a moment to thank the people making hospitality happen

Food service workers are often the first to arrive and the last to leave. They prepare meals, pour drinks, greet guests, wash dishes, coordinate operations, and help create the welcoming environments that bring communities together.

With restaurants and bars experiencing increased traffic throughout the tournament, small acts of appreciation can go a long way. A little patience, generosity, and gratitude can make a meaningful difference during long shifts and high-volume service.

Giving Kitchen believes food service workers deserve recognition not only during times of crisis, but every day for the vital role they play in communities across the country.

As soccer fever continues to grow, Giving Kitchen invites fans everywhere to remember that while athletes may be competing on the field, food service workers are helping create the moments that bring people together around the game.
